Dades Valley Morocco – Guided Hikes, Monkey Fingers & Canyon Tours
What to See and Do in the Dades Valley Morocco
Itinerary – Dades Valley Tour
Day 1 – Arrival in the Dades Valley & Monkey Fingers Hike
We arrive in the Dades Valley in the afternoon, coming from Marrakech via
Aït Benhaddou. The drive through the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass is
already spectacular — but nothing prepares you for the moment the valley
opens up in front of you.
After settling into a traditional Riad with breakfast included, we head
straight to the Monkey Fingers. These extraordinary rock formations rise
above the gorge like twisted towers — the result of millions of years of
erosion by the Dades River. I know the best viewpoint, away from the main
tourist spot, where you can sit in silence and watch the light change on
the rocks.
Dinner in the Riad. In the evening I play music and we talk about the
valley — its history, its people, and what we’ll discover tomorrow.
Day 2 – Canyon Trek, Nomadic Families & the Zarzazout Desert
This is my favourite day to guide. We start early, before the heat, and
head into the narrow canyon above the village. The walls close in around
you, the river runs cold at your feet, and the only sounds are water and
birds. Most tourists never make it this far.
Mid-morning we visit a nomadic family I’ve known for years. They live in
the valley year-round, moving their goats between the high pastures in
summer and the lower valley in winter. We sit together, drink mint tea,
and they tell us about life in the valley — translated by me, because
they speak only Tamazight and Darija.
After lunch we drive to the Zarzazout Desert — a small, hidden desert
inside the valley that almost nobody knows about. No tour buses, no
souvenir sellers. Just sand, silence and the Anti-Atlas mountains on
the horizon.
We return to the Riad for sunset. If you’re continuing to Merzouga the
next day, we leave after breakfast. If you want another day in the valley,
we stay — there’s always more to discover here.
The Monkey Fingers Rock Formations – Dades Gorge Morocco
The Monkey Fingers are the most extraordinary geological feature in the
Dades Valley — and one of the most underrated sights in all of Morocco.
These twisted towers of eroded rock rise above the gorge in shapes that
look almost alive, changing colour from ochre to deep red as the light
moves across them throughout the day.
Most visitors see them from the road. I take my guests to the viewpoints
above — a 45-minute hike from the village that almost nobody does, because
almost nobody knows it exists. From up there, you see the full valley
spread out below, the river winding through the canyon, and the Monkey
Fingers from an angle that no photograph in any guidebook has ever captured.
The best light is at sunrise and late afternoon. If you want the Monkey
Fingers at their most dramatic, we time the hike accordingly.

How far is the Dades Valley from Marrakech?
The Dades Valley is approximately 4-5 hours from Marrakech by private
vehicle. I stop at Aït Benhaddou along the way, so the drive becomes
part of the experience rather than just a transfer.
What are the Monkey Fingers in Morocco?
The Monkey Fingers are a series of dramatically eroded rock formations
in the Dades Gorge, shaped by millions of years of river erosion. They
are one of the most extraordinary geological sights in Morocco — and
almost completely unknown outside the region. I was born here and know
viewpoints that no guidebook has ever mentioned.
What is the best time of year to visit the Dades Valley?
Spring (March to May) is the best time — the valley is green, the
almond and rose trees are in bloom, and the temperatures are perfect
for hiking. Autumn (September to November) is also excellent. Summer
is hot but manageable. Winter brings snow to the High Atlas, which
makes the drive spectacular but occasionally difficult.
Can I combine the Dades Valley with a Merzouga desert tour?
Absolutely — and I highly recommend it. The Dades Valley is on the
road to Merzouga, so combining both destinations makes perfect sense.
Two nights in the Dades Valley followed by one or two nights in
Merzouga is one of my favourite itineraries. Contact me and I’ll
build the full route around your schedule.
Is the Dades Valley hike suitable for all fitness levels?
Yes. The Monkey Fingers hike is a gentle 45-minute walk suitable for
most fitness levels. The canyon trek on day two can be adapted — we
go as far as you’re comfortable. I’ve guided this route with children,
older travellers and people with limited mobility. We always go at
your pace.
