Planning a Sahara desert tour from Marrakech?
The Sahara Desert is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth — and
reaching it from Marrakech is a journey in itself. Over 3 or 7 days, you’ll
cross the High Atlas Mountains, pass through ancient kasbahs, and arrive at
the golden dunes of Merzouga as the sun sets over the horizon.

This is not a group bus tour. Every trip is private, designed around you,
and led by Hicham — a Berber guide born in Draa-Tafilalet, the region you’ll
be travelling through. He knows these roads, these villages, and these people
personally. That’s the difference.

The drive from Marrakech to the Sahara takes around 8-9 hours — but on this tour, the road is half the experience.

You’ll stop at Aït Benhaddou (a UNESCO
World Heritage ksar), wind through the Dades Valley and its dramatic rock formations, and descend into the Draa Valley before the dunes of Erg Chebbi
appear on the horizon.

Once in Merzouga, you choose: camel trek or quad bikes at sunset. That night,
sleep in a desert camp under a sky full of stars. Hicham plays Gnawa music
around the campfire — a sound that belongs to this landscape.

Day 1 – Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Dades Valley

Departure from Marrakech in a private vehicle. The route crosses
the High Atlas Mountains via the Tichka Pass (2,260m) — one of the most scenic drives in Morocco.

First stop: Aït Benhaddou. This UNESCO-listed ksar of mud-brick towers has
appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll have
time to cross the riverbed and explore at your own pace — without the rush
of a group tour.

Afternoon arrival in the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight in a traditional
Riad with breakfast included.

Day 2 – Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga

Morning trek through the Dades Canyon — Hicham’s home territory. The
“Monkey Fingers” rock formations, narrow canyon walls and local nomadic
families make this the most personal part of the trip.

Stop at Todra Gorge: 300-metre rock walls, a river running through, and a
silence that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Late afternoon arrival in Merzouga. As the sun drops, choose your experience:
camel trek into the dunes or quad bikes across the sand.

Overnight in a traditional desert camp. Gnawa music session around the
campfire with Hicham on the drums. Dinner included.

Day 3 – Sahara Sunrise → Return to Marrakech

Wake before sunrise for the dunes at their most extraordinary — golden light,
no crowds, complete silence except for the wind.

Return journey via a different route through the Draa Valley and its ancient
palm groves. Arrival in Marrakech in the evening.

Most Sahara tours from Marrakech put 10-15 strangers in a bus and follow the same route at the same pace. You stop where everyone stops. You eat where everyone eats.

A private tour with me works differently. The itinerary is built around your group — your interests, your pace, your budget. If you want an extra day in the Dades Valley, you stay. If you want to skip Ouarzazate and go straight to the dunes, you go.

I speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Darija and Tamazight. He
was born in Draa-Tafilalet — the region you’ll be travelling through.
The families you’ll share tea with, the musicians around the campfire, the hidden canyon trails — these aren’t on any group tour itinerary. They exist because I grew up here.
